Shandan county in Zhangye, Gansu province, launched its "Culture Empowers Tourism, Investment Gathers Strength" Consumption Promotion Campaign and the 3rd Chaobola Food Festival at Zhixing Square on the evening of Aug 2.
The opening ceremony drew in bustling crowds with its rich aromas filling the venue. The unveiling of the Shandan-themed supplement published by Chinese National Geography highlighted the county's captivating landscapes and cultural heritage.
Following a countdown chant by thousands, colorful fireworks lit up the night sky, heralding the culinary and cultural feast.
What's more, a big historical stage drama presented Shandan's culture and Silk Road spirit, with nearly 100 performers bridging past and present.
A magician heightened the atmosphere with card tricks and number games, while an AI-generated figure holding chaobola — a traditional local dish of lamb offal stir-fry — symbolized how technology bridges local heritage and future innovation.
During the evening, dozens of skilled chaobola cooks demonstrated their gastronomic techniques. Adding to the buzz, their sizzling woks won over the diners while generating economic vitality.
Beyond the main stage, the fusion of food and culture extended into Yanzhi Alley and featured exhibition zones. Premium agricultural specialties and intangible cultural heritage crafts shared the spotlight with over 20 local delicacies. Interactive "see, taste and buy" experiences offered immersive cultural engagements.
During the festival, Shandan county will integrate key tourism resources, including the Shandan Horse Ranch and Yanzhi Mountain. New travel routes will combine sightseeing, cultural activities, and culinary exploration, offering visitors a unique cultural tourism feast.
