Sunan Yugur autonomous county in Zhangye, Gansu province, is utilizing its plateau ecology and cultural heritage to promote rural vitalization, with ethnic specialty industries at the core.
By integrating traditional techniques with standardized production, local products derived from traditional husbandry are reaching broader markets, becoming a new engine for herders' income.
At a yogurt workshop in Kangle town, fresh plateau milk is pasteurized to preserve its natural nutritional value and aroma. After cooling, it is fermented using inherited cultures, then carefully bottled for fermentation.
With government support, the workshop has expanded its product range and aims to promote additional local delicacies.
Sunan yogurt, known for its rich flavor and pure taste, is now sold in local supermarkets, convenience stores, and via e-commerce in neighboring cities, helping more than 20 herder households increase income and establish it as a signature local product. Retailers report consistent popularity and reliable sales, with long-term supply agreements in place.
From traditional practices to a standardized industry, Sunan's development model demonstrates how local resources can fuel prosperity. Industries like deer breeding, fine-wool sheep farming, and dairy processing are flourishing.
By integrating ecological conservation, industrial development, and cultural preservation, Sunan protects the environment of the Qilian Mountains while enriching its herders, making specialty industries a solid pillar of rural vitalization.
