Zhangye came alive with resounding drumbeats as the 2026 Spring Festival Shehuo, a traditional folk performance, kicked off on the morning of Feb 26.
The event brought together over 2,800 performers from six counties and districts, delivering a spectacular folk culture gala that brought the festive atmosphere to its peak.
The parade started from Danxia East Road and wound through several major streets. Gaotai county's team of 50 drummers in red costumes led the way, their thunderous drumbeats and galloping rhythms electrifying the crowd.
Following them, Shandan county's dragon dance team performed with several golden dragons, including a striking 72-meter-long cyan dragon that emitted colorful smoke, symbolizing the county's enterprising spirit.
Sunan Yugur autonomous county's contingent displayed a vibrant tapestry of ethnic cultures, including Yugur, Mongolian, and Tibetan traditions, drawing warm applause from onlookers.
In the afternoon, the performances moved to Ganzhou district's Central Square. Gaotai county amazed the crowd with a nearly lost folk art — performers wearing fake tusks while dancing with dragons and lions.
Ganzhou district's show featured a thrilling lion dance on stacked benches up to six meters high without any safety measures, earning thunderous applause. Minle county's dragon dance added to the festive atmosphere with formations symbolizing good fortune.
After four hours of festivities, the event concluded with Shandan county winning first prize for the dragon and lion dances, and Ganzhou district taking top honors for the Shehuo performance. Participants expressed their joy in bringing traditional culture to the public, wishing everyone a prosperous Year of the Horse.
